Videos: How-to and Why-do

The How and The Why of Accordion Book Practice

During this pandemic lockdown in the heart of 2020, Todd and I, from our different corners of the world, wanted to find a way to share and give you access to our accordion book practice as a path for creative inquiry — something we’ve relied on as we grapple with so many moving parts and unknowns these past few months. We decided to put our thinking and practice down in a set of videos.

Our work with accordion books has always been a project that has focused on in-person making, and we’ve now graduated to sharing on digital platforms. Yet, in a time overtaken by digital means of connection, we want to draw attention to making with your hands. We wanted these videos below to be more than how-to videos and also capture the philosophy and purpose of accordion book practice. So these how-to videos are also supported with the why-do of this practice.

Ive been extremely lucky to be in lockdown with my brother Umeed Mistry, who is a wonderful photographer & videographer. Umeed has worked with me in my little studio space to shoot and edit all these videos.

The set of 5 videos you see here is an introduction to accordion book practice for reflection and creative inquiry. This series will take you through getting started with making books that are good thinking partners for you. They are about developing a dialogue and generative interaction with your accordion books, and discovering a practice conducive to creative inquiry.
